We give you three wonderful single vineyard examples showing why Napa is not the only place to find classic Cabernet

We’ve been huge fans of Rodney Strong’s single vineyard cabs for years. In 1974 Rodney Strong began producing boutique style Cabs from his Alexander’s Crown vineyard. This wine was an instant hit and set the bar quite high for premium Sonoma Cabernet. In 1997 the Brother’s Ridge vineyard was established followed by the 2003 acquisition of the Rockaway vineyard. With these two later additions Rodney Strong is now producing world-class single vineyard Cabernets that rival any in the Napa Valley. All three are highly recommended.

Rodney Strong 2010 Alexanders Crown Cabernet

DdV: 95
Price: $75.00
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Source: Alexander Valley – Sonoma

This has been a favorite year after year. The profile of this wine has one foot in the Bordeaux camp and one in the big Napa camp. A delicious food friendly Cab that will pair with grilled or braised dishes. On the nose subtle herbal notes and dark cherry give way to rich cassis, plum, and dark berry on the mid with a touch of chocolate. Finish is nice and long with a touch of graphite and oak. Opulent mouth feel and soft feathery tannins make this so great with food but also shines on its own. Decant to bring out more of the subtleties of this nuanced Cab.

Rodney Strong 2010 Brothers Ridge Cabernet

DdV: 95
Price: $75.00
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Source: Alexander Valley – Sonoma

This is the only premium Cabernet from RS that we hadn’t had before. We have definitely been missing something. Sourced from the Brothers Ridge vineyard that reaches up to over 1,000 feet, this is a true mountain wine that is similar to the Mount Veeder and Spring Mountain wines we love so much. On the nose, big mountain berry and subtle tobacco and leather notes gets you ready for what’s coming: a big but nuanced mountain wine. Bold dark cassis, plum, and blackberry abound on the draw and mid finishing with a touch of oak. The mouth feel is big but refined and the finish is silky long. A perfect wine for grilled steak. Decant

Rodney Strong 2010 Rockaway Cabernet

DdV: 95
Price: $75.00
Blend: 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot
Source: Alexander Valley – Sonoma

Although the Rockaway vineyard tops out at only 750 feet in elevation, the acidic, gravelly clay and fractured sandstone subsoil provides the well-drained, low pH earth similar to the Napa mountain AVAs we love. Like a mountain vineyard, small concentrated berries are produced that are big, bold, and fruit forward. On the nose some subtle chocolate and floral berry give way to rich big mountain berry and plum on the mid. Finish is long with hints of oak and graphite. A stunning wine. Decant.
