Luna Vineyards is a Napa Valley winery founded in 1995 by wine industry veterans George Vare and Mike Moone (thus the Luna name). The winery was at the start primarily focused on Italian wines such as Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese. Over the years they have expanded their focus to include very exciting Cabernets and Merlots as well as the outstanding Italian wines that gave them their first accolades.
Enter the Canto. This is a blend of 60% Sangiovese and 40% Cabernet. Think of it as a Tuscan blend on steroids.
The first thing I noticed on the nose was a wonderful wash of strawberries. On the start, the strawberrys were right on point and then gave way to huckleberry, raspberry and some plum. Just a hint of cedar and spice on a very long finish. This is a BBQ wine that dreams are made of. I paired this with baby back ribs cooked low & slow over hickory and apple wood then topped with my own guava tequilla lime BBQ sauce. The wine complimented each nuance of the dish perfectly but would also pair nicely with burgers, grilled chops, or a marinated skirt steak. At $48 it is a special occasion wine you can live with.
