Some very good wines at very good prices
This month we have a mixed bag of terrific wines ranging from the value to mid price points. The wines on the list include a refreshing Sauv. Blanc from Honig, two fantastic Sonoma sourced reds from Rodney Strong, a tasty value Pinot from BV, and a new red blend from Hess. All are great values and are very food friendly.
Rodney Strong Estate Vineyards 2009 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Blend: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Source: Alexander Valley (Sonoma), California
Nice currant and dark huckleberry on the nose moves to dark cherry, dark berry and a hint of cola on the mid. Smokey oak and a pinch of nutmeg on a medium long finish. Mouth feel is refined and moderately complex. A wonderful food friendly Cab that will pair very nicely with steaks or roasts. This one is in the drink now category so buy and enjoy.
Rodney Strong Estate Vineyards 2008 Dry Creek Malbec
Blend: 99% malbec, 1% cabernet sauvignon
Source: Dry Creek (Sonoma), California
This is the first release for their Malbec offering and is in our opinion a tremendous debut! Wonderful aromatics of dark plum, blackberry, hints of dark cranberry and spice give way to more dark berry and plum on the mid. The finish is nice and long but lacks that “pow!” of the top Malbecs. That said, this is a fantastic wine and was born for the grill. The price is another plus for a wine this complex and refined. Highly recommended!
BV (Beaulieu Vineyard) Coastal Estates 2011 Pinot Noir
Price: $7.49 – $9.99
Blend: 100 % Pinot Noir
Source: Various, California
A firm thank you to BV from value wine lovers everywhere. We’ve seen this priced as low as $7.49 and is, at that price, the best value in Cali. pinot for this vintage. A nice dry crisp pinot with strawberry, cherry and hints of cola throughout. No huge flavors here but that said, a very nice offering that will pair nicely with grilled chicken or salmon.
The Hess Collection – 2010 Hess Select Treo Winemaker’s Blend
Blend: 45% Merlot, 37% Syrah, 14% Petite Sirah, 2% Malbec, 2% Mourvedre
Source: Various, California
A fantastic grill wine for a very fan friendly price! If you’re looking for a pair for grilled bacon cheeseburgers or spicy flat-iron or flank steaks look no further. On the nose, rich plum, dark cherry, and oaky vanilla lead into more dark berry, cranberry, plum and cherry on the mid. A wonderful smooth finish rounds out this wine rich in flavors and possessing a smooth supple mouth feel. A great new addition to the fine Hess Select line!
Honig 2011 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc
Price: $14 – $17
Blend: 96% Sauvignon Blanc, 3% Semillon, 1% Muscat
Source: Napa Valley, California
A fantastic summer sipper! On the nose honey, lime, and hits of grapefruit lead to lush lime, tropical fruit, honey, and lemongrass on the mid. Finishes with a nice note of minerality. The Semillon and Muscat add a rich creamy mouth feel without making it too sweet. Great for asian grill (try a Thai mango grilled chicken) or chinese takeout. We also loved it with a creamy Brie and crackers as well as some spicy grilled shrimp appetizers. Very clever, nuanced wine for this price point. A new favorite!
